The Optical Trackball TG3 is used mainly in ultrasound and other Digital Imaging (DI) healthcare devices. It is mounted in the operator panel of the machine. It communicates with the ultrasound’s host computer over USB through a HUB built into the operator panel electronics. Over USB, the trackball position data and the status of the mouse buttons shall be communicated via a standard Microsoft driver. The trackball unit is supplied along with a ribbon cable. The cable is necessary as the trackball replaces a previous design that had an integral cable for connecting to the mouse buttons. Both the trackball and the cable are safely packed with adequate protection to survive the drop test. As this works on the optical sensor, the integrated circuit with optics take continual snapshot of ball surface and how the features in these snapshots move is used to detect ball motion.
